Bailey lurcher at home

We are so delighted to see these photos of Bailey settling with his greyhound friend, ChumChum. He still has to learn some manners as ChumChum is a more mature gentleman who doesn't want to be bothered with as much play, but his amazing adopters are helping Bailey get used to how to behave.
Everyone fell in love with Bailey as he was such an endearing soul. We are so glad he has such a lovely home and knew all our volunteers and regular followers would love to see the photos.
...
We had some lovely visitors today and both Merlin and Betty were reserved to go to separate families.
With over 100 dogs always waiting for a space with us, every dog homed helps another dog come to us.
So to adopt and help another Whittingham hound be lucky in a home and give a dog waiting a chance for a space, email wkretiredgreyhounds@gmail.com or whatsapp 07858 086623

Drummer needs a home as our oldest resident

Drummer is our oldest resident and would love a home.
He did well on his trip to the town with our volunteer, Diane, and really wants a loving home.
Drummer is a star. Move over Phil Collins?!

Bertie and Bailey lurchers find homes

We waved our two lurchers home today, Bertie and Bailey... and we can't wait to hear how they get on at home. Both have really fallen on their paws so we just keep everything crossed that they learn the ropes at home quickly.

Here is Bertie after a nice walk, enjoying his new bed and toys.

Thank you SO much to both sets of adopters for the special homes. We love knowing our dogs are going to be so loved.

Bailey groomed thanks to Emma

Massive thanks to Emma for grooming Bailey lurcher tonight in preparation for his new home tomorrow. Emma has been a friend of Whittingham for many years and we are so grateful for her help and time tonight. Bailey was an absolute star...so good in the car and so patient whilst being groomed.

Thanks so much, Emma...and we can't wait to see Bailey go home with his special adopters.

Greyhounds with other animals; Muswell Hill Primary School

Milo (was Manny)
So many people ask if greyhounds can live with other animals. Here is Penny, who found her home with multiple breeds, Dina (was Diva) sharing with her cat friends and Milo (was Manny) who joins other dogs with his walker. Manny was reactive to other breeds whilst at the Kennels, but has proven how quickly they learn to socialise when away from the Kennels. He is doing so well.

Penny and friends
So if you have another dog (or other animals) and would like to adopt a greyhound or lurcher, do get in touch. We will always try to match you appropriately.

....
And thanks to the pupils at Muswell Hill Primary School who interviewed me today for their project. We hope you come and see us and tell all your friends to adopt! 😀

We were delighted to see Guinness find his home today with another of our greyhounds and their little dog too. He is an extremely lucky boy.
Thank you to everyone who liked and shared his appeal. And a huge thanks to his lovely adopters for giving him a chance.
.....
There are always more dogs to adopt so please do continue to share appeals, whether from Whittingham or a rehoming/rescue near you.

Penny at home; thank you Christine and Broadway Pet Stores

Penny is enjoying her new home and even went for a paddle today. What a lucky girl she is. Massive thanks to Fiona for her wonderful care for all the dogs.
And a huge thank you to Christine and everyone who supports Whittingham Kennels Online Shop - to raise funds for the greyhounds. Another fantastic total for February. It is so appreciated and such a lot of work. Thank you, Christine.

Drummer is an older boy who needs a home

Drummer is an older boy who has just turned 9yrs old. It would be lovely if he found his people quickly so he doesn't have to spend too long waiting for a home at his age.
He is fine around other greyhounds and larger dogs but may need a little further careful introduction to smaller breeds.
He has had a dental so has fresh breath for anyone who is adopting him! He is clean in his kennel and calm and friendly.
For more information about Drummer or any Whittingham hound, email wkretiredgreyhounds@gmail.com or whatsapp 07858 086623
We home within a radius of 90mins from Waltham Abbey and homechecks apply (unless we know you)!

Gypsy, Milo and weekend update

Gypsy and Milo (was Manny) had a Whittingham reunion on Guernsey! How lovely to see them both together. We are very jealous about the lovely beach walks!!
Yesterday, we saw Penny go home with the amazing Fiona who has given so many dogs a home. We knew Penny was totally fine with other breeds after her promotional work at the Ealing Animals Fair last week and this is the only crucial thing for Fiona. What a lucky dog she is.
And we were delighted to see little Abbi reserved today with a special family who have another of our dogs.
And thanks to everyone who shared/liked the appeal for Guinness. We have a potential home for him and another two people interested.

Guinness is looking for a home

Update: Guinness is now reserved pending final confirmation.

Guinness the lurcher had two enquiries last week, but sadly both sets of people concluded he wasn't right for them. So he needs another chance! Could you be the one for Guinness?

He is a lovely boy and really affectionate when he knows you. He is a bit worried at first but quickly comes round. He is fine with other breeds with initial care and just wants to play. He can be a little strong but this would quickly improve with daily walks on a lead.
We don't know his age but would estimate between 2 and 4yrs.
He is quiet and clean in the kennels and a special boy.
Home checks apply and we home within a 90mins radius of Waltham Abbey.

At the Ealing Animal Charities Fair

We were honoured to join the Ealing Animal Fair today and share Whittingham Kennels' cause alongside a huge amount of amazing animal charities.
The Fair is organised by Marion and Ray who have been so amazingly wonderful to so many animal causes. Everyone is always so welcoming and kind and we were privileged to be able to take two greyhounds with us and show everyone how gentle and calm they are.
Our super-dedicated volunteer, Linda, and I spent the day telling visitors about greyhounds and encouraging everyone to adopt a greyhound. Greyhound, Penny, went with us to represent the many dogs in the Kennels that need homes and she was an absolute superstar! She was brilliant with all the small dogs/other breeds and all the people who came to say hello to her. My Sylvie was the greyhound representative of homed dogs and did a sterling job meeting everyone and showing greyhounds in their natural habitat (asleep on the bed next to the stall)! She was such a nervous dog when she was adopted but did so incredibly well today greeting everyone. It was also great to put right the common misconceptions with some visitors about how little exercise greyhounds need!
Judy's cards and our merchandise sold well too which was amazing... but above all, we were delighted to take our place next to so many worthy causes and see everyone doing well too. The amazing team from Nowzad are always inspirational and David gave a brilliant talk about their work in Ukraine and Afghanistan. Our greyhound, Penny, was delighted to meet little Ewok who had been on the evacuation flight out of Afghanistan in 2021.

Our friends from Dogs on the Streets and ASWA were also there alongside so many brilliant causes, including Camp Beagle and charities representing all animals from hedgehogs to elephants! Actor, Peter Egan (a huge animal advocate) dropped by too so we accosted him for a photograph with Penny!
A huge thanks to Marion, Ray and all the organisers; to everyone who visited our stall and the event; and to Linda for all her amazing dedication and help.
We hope you enjoy the photos and keep spreading the word about adoption of greyhounds and any needy animals (as well as the importance of neutering and compassion for all animals).

Shine and Riley find homes!

Today saw the homing of both Shine and, coincidentally, his brother, Riley (now Teddy) to their homes. Both sets of adopters have adopted in the past from Whittingham and were ready to give another lucky dog a great home.
Shine is quite local and went off first to his very kind adopter.
And Riley (pictured) was next, going to his lovely adopters who have moved to Lincolnshire but came all the way to pick him up.
Our greyhounds are getting to be very well travelled!!
We wish them both well as they settle and can't wait for updates. Huge thanks to both adopters.

Gypsy's story!

Gypsy's journey!
We were delighted to wave Gypsy off from the Kennels yesterday with her lovely new adopters.
Normally, we home within a 90 mins radius of the Kennels for homecheck purposes (or if there is an emergency and we need to step in), but we make exceptions too for particular circumstances.
After seeing the trips to Guernsey with the Pet Bus, we were contacted by a lovely family on Guernsey to see if we would be willing to let them adopt. They were happy to make the trip, get the ferry and even paid for a pet cabin on the way home so the chosen dog could stay with them. After glowing references from their vet and a homecheck by the wonderful Michael (and lots of support from the amazing Gail, as always), we welcomed them yesterday and Gypsy was the lucky dog. The family had travelled by car, stayed overnight and even endured sea sickness to reach us. What dedication!

Gypsy set off with them at about 2.30pm. It was a long trip home but Gypsy behaved wonderfully, even playing with her toys on the ferry. They finally got off the ferry at 6am and she is home and asleep with her teddies.
Thanks so much to her amazing new family.
(They were lucky we didn't try to hide in the boot of their car and go too)!

Three lurchers looking for homes

Bertie

We have three lurchers at the moment. We can't always take lurchers (as there are so many greyhounds waiting) but we did take Bertie and two from the local pound once they had served their time: Bailey and Guinness.

Bailey
Bailey has interest but the other two would love a home. Bertie is confident and friendly. He is fine with small dogs but a bit worried by bigger breeds at the Kennels (better when away from the kennel environment) and Guinness who is slightly nervous, but quickly comes round.
Guinness

Guinness seems fine with other breeds according to initial assessments.
To adopt a greyhound or lurcher, email wkretiredgreyhounds@gmail.com or whatsapp 07858 086623
Home checks apply (unless you have adopted from us before).

Rokko (was Rocky) settles at home

Rokko (was Rocky), who went home yesterday, is settling well so far and enjoying his new home. He has met other breeds without issue and is a very lucky boy.

Huge thanks to his wonderful adopter for giving another Whittingham dog a loving home and for all her incredible support for the Kennels.

To help another dog be as lucky, email wkretiredgreyhounds@gmail.com or whatsapp 07858 086623

Nassa, Money and Abbi arrive to find homes; Rocky (now Rokko) finds a home!

Nassa

Our latest new arrivals are Nassa (grey face) - 5yrs, Drummer (pink collar) ((he did have another name but it would have been controversial so he has had a name change)! - nearly 9yrs, and Diamond (pink lead) - 3yrs.
They are all loving and deserve the best of homes.
Drummer

Email wkretiredgreyhounds@gmail.com or whatsapp 07858 086623 to adopt or for more information about the adoption process.

Diamond

.....
We were delighted to see Rocky (now Rokko) off to his new home with an amazing long-term adopter and supporter. He is a very lucky boy.
Huge thanks to all our regular volunteers too!

Please support marathon runner, Michelle!

Michelle is running the London Marathon again this year and has included Whittingham again as one of two charities she is supporting. She is super speedy and we are very grateful that she has chosen to support us again.
Please do cheer her on!
Here is a link to her giving page. Thank you to anyone who would like to support her.

Ealing Fair - 7th March

We will be attending the Ealing Animals Fair next Saturday 7th March. Do come and see us!

It is a lovely Fair with stalls from like-minded animal charities. Hear talks about other causes too, including our friends at Nowzad and Dogs on the Streets.

Not to be missed!

Legend says 'thank you'

Legend and everyone would like to thank Broxbourne Dog Club for their very generous donation. And to Liz for nominating Whittingham as the charity.
They are all legends too!
....
Legend is still waiting for his chance. He's such a lovely boy and only 6yrs old, despite being very grey!

Our dogs adapt so well.

Harry says 'thank you'

Harry and everyone at Whittingham would like to say a huge thank you to Marie and family (with Jack) for their food donations today and bringing so many sacks of biscuits to the Kennels. This was in memory of a member of their family who loved animals and the forest.
We are so grateful and also for all their care for Jack.

....
Harry and all the residents would love to fall on their paws too. Could you help them be as lucky?

Email wkretiredgreyhounds@gmail.com or whatsapp 07858 086623 to offer a greyhound or lurcher a loving home.

Lovely book, "Greyhounds and Galgos" by Elena Marchi (featuring Jerry)

Jerry (pictured) and I are very proud to be part of this lovely book, Greyhounds and Galgos, Echoes of London. Elena Marchi photographed Greyhounds and Galgos in many settings, focusing on dogs in the city to show how these dogs can thrive and flourish in homes around London.
Another Whittingham hound, Freya, is included and her adopters put us forward to promote a kennel dog looking for a home. It rather backfired as, due to an early start in Greenwich, he spent the night with me and then stayed!!
I was also honoured to be asked to write the section about adopting greyhounds at the end of the book.
With huge thanks to Elena and everyone who contributed. Let's hope it shows everyone that greyhounds and sighthounds make great additions to any home.
50% of proceeds go to Project Galgo

Liam, Money and Abbi arrive to find homes

Liam

Liam, Money (terrible name!) (in orange collar), and Abbi (brindle) are our three latest new arrivals. They have all been on our waiting list for many months.
Money
The boys are confident and friendly and will be assessed around other breeds as soon as possible.

Abbi

Abbi is very nervous at the moment but we are hopeful that she will come out of her shell before too long, especially when she shares with another greyhound. She will need a patient and understanding home though.
To adopt a greyhound or lurcher, email wkretiredgreyhounds@gmail.com or whatsapp 07858 086623

Collections (and Jerry)!

A huge thanks to everyone who donates. To Mary for bedding, Tia for bedding, Sonia for the bag of goods, Diana and Bev for the coats, and to Medivet Waltham Abbey for always collecting for us.
Jerry almost lost his space in the car whilst helping take it all to the Kennels!! 🤣🤣

Chance and Heidi find a home

Sisters, Chance (now Joan) and Heidi (now Jericha) found their home yesterday with lovely adopters who are friends of another of our adopters.
Joan and Jericha are learning quickly and really confident with people (which is important as they live in school grounds with their adopters)!
We hope they will show the whole school that everyone should adopt a greyhound!
A huge thanks to their adopters for giving them both a home. They had only intended to adopt one dog but fell for the sisters. What lucky dogs.

Max and Manny (now Milo) find homes in Guernsey

Max and Milo (was Manny) had an epic day!
Today was the day when the lovely people at the The Pet Bus enabled Max and Manny (now called Milo) to get to their special homes!
The boys were collected at 8.30am and handed over by Doreen and Ray at the Kennels to begin their journey. We know they are in wonderful hands as the Pet Bus keep us all posted throughout the journey.
(Nevertheless, we are all chewing our nails to the elbow 🤣🤣 until we know they are safely at their destination of Guernsey).

Once again, our lovely friend, Gail, who homed for many years on the Channel Islands had worked her magic and found two homes for our dogs. One with Katie and Peter (who had had greyhounds before) and one with Sandra, who flew all the way from Guernsey and spent three days with Max at the Kennels. Michael home checked in Guernsey and we were all set to go!
Milo took it all in his stride but Max looked a little more hesitant, but we knew he would know Sandra at the other end. With a quick walk before the ferry, they made the crossing and arrived just before 6pm.
Milo (was Manny) at home
Thanks so much to everyone who helped: primarily the new adopters, the lovely people from the Pet Bus, Gail and Michael and all our volunteers who helped Sandra whilst she was staying near the Kennels.
It is so wonderful to see both boys at home. We wish them luck and send them with our love. We can't wait to hear about the next part of their adventure too!
Max at home

To help another dog be lucky like Milo and Max, email wkretiredgreyhounds@gmail.com or whatsapp 07858 086623.
Please note, we usually home within a 90mins radius of Waltham Abbey for homecheck/in case of emergency purposes.

A busy week at the Kennels...

It's all go this week!
Here is Carl doing well at home so far. Everything is a learning curve at the start but he's been clean and getting along well with all the other dogs.
Today, we saw Heidi and Chance find their homes with lovely people. They have a few things to learn too in a new home but we wish them all the best as they find their feet.
And Manny (now Milo) and Max are on their way to Guernsey as we speak. But we will update later as we are currently chewing our nails down to the elbow until they arrive! But they are with the Pet Bus so in wonderful hands.
To help another Whittingham Kennels - Retired Greyhounds Charity hound find a home, email wkretiredgreyhounds@gmail.com or whatsapp 07858 086623. New arrivals are pending so there will always be someone to suit your home set up.
....
A huge thanks too, to Ian, for his work today in clearing overgrowth from the unused gallop. It is a mighty task and he has worked so hard!
